My Students

My school serves approximately 700 students. Our students are special because they are at the beginning of their lifelong journey as readers, writers, and mathematicians.

My school is unique because it is so diverse!

Demographics are as follows: Caucasian 24%, African-American 39%, Hispanic 24%, Asian 7%, American Indian .9% other 5%. The LEP students have risen to 134% and 7% is EC. Our needs continue to grow every year. However, I love my school because it is racially, ethnically, and economically diverse, more so than any other school in which I've taught. My school provides a wonderful opportunity to serve as a model for our district for how successful diverse schools can be.

With all that being said, I want to ensure our students academic, social, and emotional needs are met. This project is special because it benefits more than just my students, it would positively impact all Kindergarten, 1st Grade and Exceptional Children at my school. With the help of a few more resources, I know that these kiddos will continue to mold a positive model for diverse schools in urban education.

My Project

The Sensory Paths are a researched base method of including sensory stimulation into children's day to day activities. I selected the Rainforest theme which includes alphabetic concepts, number identification, and additional cross body exercises which help with cognition. It is a sensory movement path that includes a balance line, push wall, visual discrimination activities, leaping logs, and much more! Students will actively move through the activities during transitions to and from the classroom. The pathways will be placed in the Kindergarten-1st Grade/ EC hallway. This will benefit our youngest population and our EC students greatly!

The paths, engage the whole child focusing on balance and coordination, while reinforcing important foundational skills.

Not to mention, it is fun! After the last two years with Covid, we are finally bringing students back into the buildings with a sense of safety and normalcy. I believe that these paths will enhance our student's overall experience at school. These pathways will give all students an opportunity to learn while moving, engage in physical activity, and increase sensory pathways. All of the above will positively impact students in the classroom and beyond.
