My Students
Have you ever had a thought that you just had to get down and remember? My students need help to have the materials needed to keep a journal to organize their thoughts and ideas as they change their communities and their world.
Our students are unique.
We live in a community that is high in support, but often low on resources. When our kids get their hands on an idea and the resources that they need, they produce amazing things. Our school is a gem hidden in the rough. Although we are in a community where many families struggle financially, our school has become a place of safety, learning and pride. The students learn quickly that their teachers and administrators are there to help and to love. The trust between students and teachers leads to great relationships and results in high academic achievement.
My Project
So often in education, we speak of thinking critically. Yet too often immediately after we talk about thinking critically, we push ourselves and our students on to the next objective before anyone has any time to reflect! Journals allow students a space that is all their own to put their thoughts to paper. By keeping a journal, students are better able to connect the lessons and activities in class to what is going on in their lives outside of school.
In a social studies class, this connection is the key to learning and making a difference. Students are pushed to find some way to release their inner superhero and change the world. Reflecting is one of the primary processes in finding this release.
Many of my students have a hard time getting the materials for class that they need. My students need 140 composition notebooks to allow them to keep clean, neat and organized journals. These simple composition notebooks will give students something tangible that is theirs, that they can make clean and organized, and in which they can develop their plans to change the world.
The mind of a young person is a crazy place to be!
Many students have thoughts running through their mind, great ideas or incredible solutions to difficult problems or the next great social movement. But for too many young kids, their ideas are shot down as insignificant or unrealistic. A journal is a place for a student to incubate an idea free from limitations that are often put on by adults. Kids can dream big! As a society, we need these dreams!
