Diversity and inclusion is the mantra that drives each member of our school's staff. Our students' ethnic roots span the globe; Turkish, Russian, Ukraine, Spanish, African American, and many more. Here we see every skin color and many dialects and yet we all come together to work for a common understanding. This marriage of backgrounds expands into our curriculum. While we emphasize a strong scientific base we also integrate this with the arts and humanities. The artists become scientists and scientists discover creativity through the arts. Many of my students struggle with learning, social and emotional disabilities. The economic background is wide and includes many students on the free and reduced-price lunch program.
At our school students strive to develop the intellectual, linguistic, cultural, interpersonal, and advocacy skills needed to succeed in a global future.
They nurture each other through clubs, after-school projects, activities, and a hope squad whose student members are trained to intervene for a peer in crisis.
They win awards in Robotics, host a yearly STEM fest, win art contests, display great musical abilities, and last year our 6th graders beat out Juniors and Seniors in high school.
My Project
Keeping 3D pens maintenance can be a challenge. Things happen and sometimes we have to fix a clog or remove old filament from the shaft. But I am very good at getting them up and running again. Sometimes, though, I have to send them in to be serviced and students are left with not enough pens to go around. As it is I have only enough pens for one class. If any pens are decommissioned even for a week it becomes very frustrating for students who are on fire to create.
Between lending pens to homebound students and sending pens to be serviced we just don't have enough to go around.
Ten more pens would go a long way to preventing any down time for students on a project. The students have been wonderful and patient even though I know they are frustrated.
I have been using 3D pens in my classroom for 6 years. It has been a wonderful way for students to understand what the third dimension really is and how to create form . Each time I teach my 3D pen lessons I am amazed at how students learn to see their art in a different way. They learn to see the transition between what begins on paper and eventually becomes three dimensional.
I appreciate your help with this project. It is the one medium that students will use over and over and create as often as they can. Thank-you from all of us.
