Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in an urban high school where the majority of students live below the poverty line.
I have served in this district as a special education teacher for 21 years and happily continue to do so.
Teaching is my passion, my calling and I could not imagine doing anything else in this world.
My present classroom contains 10 significant intellectually disabled students, ages 16-19, of varying functioning levels. 80% of my students are MLL’s ( Multilingual Learners) and 10% is non-verbal.
Due to the differing abilities of my students preparing them to enter the adult world as independent as they can be is high priority.
My Project
This transition train is heading straight to Fiore Station. Here at Fiore station, this project will allow my students the opportunity to develop cars full of transition knowledge to assist them in chugging full steam ahead in their lives after school.
First stop, Careers.
Students will learn about various STEM and community workers using the book set and workbooks in this project to spark an interest for further investigation.
Second stop, Moods and Emotions. Students will learn about different moods and emotions with a focus on workplace attitudes so they may have the tools to keep their train on the right track.
Third Stop, Differing Abilities. My students are of varying abilities, so it's important to know how fast (pacing) and far (stamina) your train can travel in the workplace. This will focus on self advocacy and knowing your rights, responsibilities, limits and rules on the track.
Fourth stop, Vocabulary. All About Me, Foods and community vocabulary will assist students in navigating their journey into adulthood.
