Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Tell me I'll forget, show me I'll remember, involve me I'll learn..." This simple yet eloquent quote perfectly illustrates the idea behind hands-on/minds-on learning! Jump Math curriculum is research-based and shown to accelerate student learning twice as fast as regular curriculum.

I teach in a high poverty school where all of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.

Most of the students at my school are English learners, and many of the parents work in agriculture. My students face many challenges: both parents working, learning a second language while also mastering the rigorous demands of the Common Core State Standards.

My Project

The resources I am requesting will help my students learn the new Common Core State Standards and make them more comprehensible because students will be constructing meaning with research-based curriculum that is shown to accelerate learning twice as fast as regular curriculum as well as with a plethora of interesting learning center activities. SMART Board lessons, in addition to learning centers manipulative activities that include counters, fraction bars, fraction circles, number lines, and decimal charts will require students to make sense of math concepts in fractions, decimals, number sense, geometry and measurement and will inspire and motivate them to work through the rigors of the new math standards. These activities will help students to reason abstractly, construct viable arguments, and attend to precision. Most importantly, hands-on manipulatives will help my students with math by using and making models of the math concepts.

This much needed Jump Math curriculum and SMART Board activities are a necessity in my classroom because students will truly be involved in the learning process, not just told or shown, which happens all too often with the pressure to perform on standardized tests.

This curriculum will go a long way toward making learning meaningful, interesting, understandable, and cement long term memory learning.
