My Students

A typical day in my classroom is spent teaching and learning mathematics at the middle school level. Students in my classroom have access to many technological products, including two computers, a SMARTboard, and a multitude of manipulatives.

My students are middle school students on the South Side of Chicago.

They have been identified as having either a learning disability or a cognitive impairment. They are required to take all of the same assessments as other students in their school and need the same access to the Common Core curriculum as their students. The students in my class enjoy mathematics when it is engaging and they can make connections to its usefulness to their lives and future. My school has been identified as a low income, low performing school on the South Side of Chicago. The school has a performing arts focus that has created a positive environment for the students and community.

My Project

Students will use the materials that I am requesting on a daily basis. There are not many Common Core curriculum materials that have been approved by the district and this is one of the few that has been proven by research to provide improvement of mathematics. The curriculum will provide intensive instruction at their grade level that is accessible to them at their current instructional level. The curriculum provides instruction in number sense, fractions, algebra, geometry, and data analysis.

This project will allow my students to have better access to learning the Common Core standards and have a more enriched learning experience in my classroom.

Students will have a curriculum that more closely mirrors the experiences of students in the general education mathematics classrooms.
