J.U.M.P. into Healthcare Career and Technical Education
Help me give my students a photo-quality color printer so they can print high-quality graphics to use for their state leadership conference presentation materials.
The Junior Upcoming Medical Professionals (J.U.M.P.) students need your help! My students are part of a brand-new elective at my school to encourage students to explore and prepare for a career in the health sciences. Until this year, the program was run as an after-school student organization, and I am so excited to have an entire year with these students for us to meet every single day during the school day! Our middle school division is called J.U.M.P. Junior Upcoming Medical Professionals), and we are part of the national organization called H.O.S.A. (Healthcare Occupations Students of America).
Through this class, I hope to empower these future health professionals to become leaders in the global health community through education, collaboration, and experience.
Our purpose is to develop leadership and technical skills through project-based learning and community service projects.
My Project
Throughout the year, students will have the opportunity to select their own projects from a menu of 36 different healthcare related activities where they will showcase their skills, knowledge, and leadership. These fall into the following categories: Health Science, Health Professions, Emergency Preparedness, Leadership, and Teamwork. Additionally, students organize, promote, and execute community service projects throughout the year, including a toy drive for Toys for Tots around the holidays, and a "baby shower" to collect baby items for a local homeless intervention shelter.
Our classroom does not currently have a color printer, and this grant would allow us to print graphics that can be used for their projects and to promote our community service projects.
The projects that students complete throughout the year all lead to our annual state leadership conference where they will compete with students across the state in various healthcare competitions. Having crisp, clean, and professional-looking printed graphics is of utmost importance to score maximum points with the judges. By participating in these experiences, students will learn more about the rapidly-growing health and wellness industry and feel more empowered about their future by developing leadership skills.
