Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with 100% of our students receiving free lunch. Many of my students receive backpack food on the weekend and our school also runs a food pantry for our families monthly. About 80% our students come from different countries and have come to America for a better way of life, but still struggle from day to day. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.

My Project

I am a first year counselor and my school or district does not have the funds to allot money for our counseling department to purchase materials that I can use with the students in small group and individual counseling and classroom guidance. I have reached my personal spending limit for materials this year. I love the Julia Cook books because they use everyday issues to help solve problems and the book is at the perspective of the children. The students love the books, too, because they are so well written and activities can be centered around what the book is teaching.
