My Project
Each spring at my school, we begin a circus unit to combat the stress of taking the state tests. What better way to release stress than to juggle! Students benefit from juggling in several ways; hand-eye coordination, learning the simple benefits of practicing (we link this to their daily reading), participating in an activity that does not require English speaking skills, creating new neural pathways in their brains, and finding a way to feel in control of something. We all also benefit by laughing a ton!
We LOVE to juggle!
For 16 years the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students at our amazing school in Brooklyn, NY have been learning to juggle. And this year we desperately need new juggling balls. At the start of our unit, we only need one ball per student in each class- so about 30- which we almost have- but they are mis-matched, beat-up, and dirty. Then, as the students get better, we need two balls per student. And hopefully by the end of the unit most students are working with three! That's around 90 balls flying around my classroom. (Yes. I am a bit crazy.)
We are a wonderful school in a vibrant but under-resourced neighborhood. The children in my school are truly special- they find strength in what many would consider obstacles. Most students are learning English. Many students are living in temporary housing. Still they come to school curious about life and each other's cultures and experiences. (And curious about school basics like math and reading!) It has been my honor to work with these students and share with them the joys of singing, dancing, acting, and circus. Please help us continue our fun tradition of juggling.
