My Students
"Today a reader, tomorrow a leader."
When you walk into our room, literacy block is one of the most anticipated times of the day. Students are curled up in lounge chairs or lying on bean bags within the classroom library. My students love to read, but need more books at their level.
I teach a diverse group of children with backgrounds ranging from military families to low-income households.
Our school is small and takes on many characteristics of an inner city school. We are a magnet school of technology that serves local children, as well as those who earn spots through the lottery system.
My Project
I picture my classroom FULL of reading resources; from poetry and magazines, to adventure and science-fiction novels. My students need individualized book boxes to be filled with books at their own reading levels. They will learn to become familiar with a text, grow in their fluency and comprehension skills, and take ownership of their reading.
Donations to my classroom will change the lives of these low-income students who desperately need resources outside of a computer.
There is a balance to learning with technology, and students also need hands-on materials. This donation will allow each and every one of my students to have access to books that they can read and books that will challenge them to become better readers.
More than half of students from low‑income households
