This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We all have experienced what it felt like when we were learning how to read. How did it feel when a grade level text consisting of 500 words were placed in front of us. Were we expected to read and comprehend what we have read? Did this take away the joy and love out of reading?
This year I teach a special education class consisting of students who have Autism Mild/Moderate, grades varying from second through fourth.
Reading is one area of concern that my students are faced with day to day. I have very few students who are working on grade level and then those who are just learning the basics of reading. In working with my students, I have seen the frustrations and anxiety that arise when a student who is learning basic phonemes is asked to read a text that is written on a fourth grade level. In meeting the needs of my students and the reading curriculum, I will like to find supplemental resources that can boost reading skills, provide engagement, allowing independency, and that are developmentally appropriate.
My students attend a Title 1 public school, K-5(where the students are mainstreamed with general education classes for certain subjects throughout the day).
My Project
I am asking for a Tag Reader and books that my students will be able to access successfully and independently throughout the day. With the use of this adaptive technology, students will be able to receive positive feedback and help when they are reading. This device reads words to the students when they are not sure of how to pronounce, segment, or blend a word together. It gives them the power to choose a book of interest and become engaged with the text, not worrying but enjoying the actual story. I believe the more exposure to books at their levels, the better they will get in reading and the more they will want to read in the future.
In having a tool in the classroom where the students can go to without assistance and learn from is the number one goal.
Them having the opportunity to read books that catch their interests and not feel intimidated but know that they can overcome these obstacles and enjoy reading with the Tag Reader.
