Journeys: Children on the Move

My students need books, both fiction and informational text, to help them understand and empathize with the challenges faced by others, so that they can begin to see how they might create meaningful and positive change.

My Students

On the cusp of adolescence, the students I have the privilege of learning with, come to school with amazing potential and energy. Tucked away in a quiet and safe bedroom community, twenty miles or so from a major metropolitan area in the center of our country, they have an intense curiosity about the wider world.

To engage vibrant minds we reach out to the wider world, engaging in inquiries into international initiatives like the U.N's Global Goals for Sustainable Development, environmental education through the National Bluebird Project, and through smaller initiatives like March Book Madness, Global Read Aloud, and the Global Math Task Twitter Challenge.

Tools like KidBlogs, Twitter, and Skype allow us to tell our stories and hear the stories of others from all around the world.

We are a classroom of avid readers. Books play a central role in helping us learn about the world, developing empathy and appreciation for people, places, and cultures we wouldn't otherwise know. Books offer a uniquely immersive experience, where we can enter another world and see through the eyes of another, if only briefly.

My Project

Globally, one in every 122 humans is now either a refugee, internally displaced, or seeking asylum, and usually more than half of any refugee population are children.* Helping my students to empathize with the journeys refugee children must endure, and understand the causes and challenges of the crisis as a whole, lays a foundation that will encourage and empower my students to take action on one of our most critical global issues.

Recent research has shown that when readers are immersed in a story, their brains process the experiences of the main characters as their own, leaving readers' brains more tolerant and empathetic.

With the help of this grant, groups of six students and their teacher will read both a fiction and a nonfiction book about a current refugee crisis, exploring the text in greater depth through book club conversations. Students will then have the opportunity to join their new knowledge with that of their classmates to construct a more comprehensive understanding of children on the move throughout the world today.

These book clubs will be one component in a larger study of Journeys, which will include journeys of refugees, journeys of water in the water cycle, journeys of birds in migration, and journeys of cultures across space and time.
