My Students

Do you remember the first time you read about your favorite animal, place or event that happened before you were born? My students want that opportunity too! They want to travel in time and read about habitats, disasters, and people. Be that time machine for them and allow them to journey.

I have a fourth grade classroom in an urban public school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The classroom is filled with 20 students (13 boys and 7 girls) who are bursting with curiosity! They want to know everything! It is a mixed-level ability classroom with reading levels as low as second grade to as high as sixth grade. They love to read and ask many questions.

My Project

Our school wants us to give them a new word every week. I'm extending that and giving them a new word on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Everyday we engage in conversation that is related to the real world and I draw words that they might see when reading a book. Having the Vocabulary Journal will give them a consistent place to write their words, definition, illustration and sentence. The Eyewitness Nonfiction Readers will give them the opportunity to learn about new events in history, people, animals and places. It will expose them to new words that they can place in the journal as well. Having the book cart will provide me with a neat place to store the books and the students have easy access to the books. My students will have a chance to explore the world without leaving the classroom!

When I was a child, I learned new words everyday and placed them in an index card box.

I loved it! I read encyclopedias and watched National Geographic on the regular. I want to expose my students to what I had early on in life as a young student. I enjoyed traveling without even leaving the sofa in my living room! Donating to this project will expose my students to the world...and you can be that person to do just that!
