This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is located in the southwestern part of Houston and serves kids from Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade. We are a neighborhood school and a community in the truest sense of the word. We work very closely with our kids and their families to put them on the path to success. We are a diverse place in many ways and I am very fortunate to teach such a wonderful group of kids.

The best books take us on a journey and transport us to another time and place.

Those stories can be even more exciting when they force us to take part in the adventure. I am looking to bolster my classroom library and take my students on a trip to far away lands with titles from the "You Choose" series. I know these materials will make a big difference in my class.

My Project

My students need to explore non-western civilizations and gain a better understand of what life was like for people living in ancient China and the Aztec Empire. The You Choose series offers an engaging and age appropriate set of books to put students in those places in upcoming units.

Reading and journaling days have been an important addition to my classroom this year and having a classroom set of these books will help classes explore these places as a regular part of their course of study.

I have had a lot of success using graphic novels to teach about the Revolutionary War and the US Constitution in the fall and I have no doubt that the You Choose series will provide a similar level of interest.
