Journey Through Literature; Creating Lifelong Readers
My students need books such as "Every Living Thing", "Wonder", and "Esperanza Rising". We will also be studying biographies, natural disasters and Colonial times.
"A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading."
-William Styron. My students are ready to discover great books that will change their lives and make them lifelong readers!
My students come from all over the world!
They come to New York City with vast life experiences and they have traveled far and wide in hopes of a quality education. They are lively, diverse and eager to learn! Reading is one of their favorite parts of the school day! At our school, we encourage our students to foster a love for reading and literature. Reading should be a lifelong hobby and we hope that each one of our students leaves the classroom clutching a book that they can't wait to get home and open up again! These students ask me everyday if I have any more books. Unfortunately, I give them all that I can. They need quality literature from exciting authors.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of books for my classroom this year. These fourth and fifth graders will be learning along with me. During our class lessons, I envision them having a copy of the book to read along and then have the opportunity to take it home. They will be engaged in thoughtful discussion around the themes and dramatic characters in the books. They will be able to annotate their thoughts and ideas beyond the books' words and into their writing notebooks. They will get to bring these books home and crawl into bed at night excited to finish just one more chapter. My students who are learning English will have their own copy to see the words come to life in front of their eyes. They can then practice speaking them and using them in conversation. Students will learn to gather evidence and quote authors to argue their point or express their opinions. They will write essays that will explain specific topics and showcase their expertise.
Your donations will bring such joy and excitement to reading for these 4th and 5th grade students.
Great literature can allow them to leave their everyday troubles and travel to new, thrilling places. My goal is to foster a great love and everlasting relationship with reading through great literature.
