Journey into the Unknown

My students need a way to experience different textures & ways to say "Hello!" They need wrist ribbons, dough rollers, and a camera.

My Students

Do you remember when you brought your artwork home? Or when you touched a new texture? So much of what our students create now doesn't necessarily yield an actual product to take home because a lot are cooperative in nature! With a camera to capture their work, we can send it home w/ all students!

Students in our class range in ability levels.

We have 3 year olds with a variety of delays that are learning how to imitate peers or navigate the classroom environment or routines. We also have 5 year old students that are ready to teach others about different ways to communicate. Our 4 year old students are a mixture of both that enjoy exploring different textured items. A majority of our students also qualify for free or reduced breakfast/lunch. They all however enjoy being in school and the experiments & experiences they have here!

My Project

Many of our students are bilingual & by sharing different ways to greet each other, we recognize there are other ways to say 'hi' & that there are other people out there in the unknown that communicate in other languages! We can also communicate in the way we move. With the wrist ribbons, our students will become motivated to move their arms to make something happen. The texture of the material will also help them become familiar with different material types & how it can follow the way they move. It will give them a sense of what they are capable of doing & give them a way to participate. The textures that the rolling pins will leave when we explore play dough will also help students that have difficulty with distinguishing differences in what they create both visually & tactilely. With a camera we will be able to capture all the different experiences and science experiments that we perform in class & will enable us to share it with our families!

Have you noticed that when you pull out a camera in front of a group of kids you will see them smile, pose, or find someone to take a picture with?

This pride in capturing the act of being with others is priceless. Have you seen students when they are so proud of their work that they ask you to take a picture of it? Having a camera in the class will create a pride in what they do together and help their journey into the unknown become quite familiar.
