This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are talented, creative, independent and full of questions. They enjoy engaging experiences and challenges that allow them to explore different solutions. My students are exceptional, learning two languages at once--English and Spanish!
While many of the students at my school have access to educational experiences outside of the school day, there are too many who do not.
Some of our families struggle to find financial stability, often working several jobs at once. They do not regularly visit museums or aquariums. Their children do not often participate in science camps or after school science enrichment classes. These amazing experiences are only available to them through school.
Our school is in the heart of our city. Yet even though we are relatively close to the beach (about an hour away), some of our students have never seen the ocean or been inside an aquarium. We are a Title I school, which means that about 50% of our student population is considered low income per the meal application. Our parents are very involved and they do a lot of fundraising to support the arts, PE, social-emotional learning, professional development, as well as to provide basic school supplies.
My Project
The Next Generation Science Standards for second-grade call for students to make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats. While we could observe pictures of animals, wouldn't it be much better to actually see animals up close? Observations and comparisons would be through an interactive and dynamic educational experience to an aquarium that displays about 12,000 animals representing the diversity of the Pacific Ocean. In this way, science would come alive for the students.
The donations to this project will not only help address the science standards but more importantly, they will help encourage the students' sense of wonder and respect for the Pacific Ocean.
The students will see themselves as being a little more connected to the ocean and its inhabitants, and gain a deeper understanding of their role in the conservation of this vast ocean. This idea of conservation is one that we promote at our school. The students learn about composting from our garden educators and we also have an afterschool garden club. By participating in this educational journey to the aquarium, the students will see a connection between conservation efforts across disciplines and they will see how they can make a difference.
The students have already shown an astonishing interest in taking care of our planet, and this trip will only help enrich this desire.
