My Project
Our student paper, Ka Lama Hawai'i has only recently gone live and our first class of student writers has begun to pitch their story ideas for the semester. The purpose of our paper is to amplify student voices on campus. Yet, currently, we have only two recording and transcription devices to share between 9 student journalists. Moreover, those devices are tablets with software that can be awkward to transport and hold. The widespread integration of AI technology this year has made recording and transcription more convenient than ever. We need an easy and effective way to capture the thoughts and opinions of students on campus and these seem to provide that.
The recording devices will help our Journalism students amplify the voices of their peers and more copies of our course texts books will ensure that their message is clear and effective.
Before now, I only had three copies of these texts for the News Writing Club to use. Now that the paper is maintained by a class, we clearly need more.
These texts are essential to our studentsʻ learning. All together, they provide a theoretical understanding of the news and its importance, technical information about news writing in different genres, and stylistic and technical advice for activities like generating interview questions and producing journalistic prose with a literary purpose. Guided by these lights, and enabled by new technology, our students are sure to become skilled and purposeful communicators who seek the right kinds of change in their communities.
