Journalism Necessities for High School Newspaper

My Students

I teach high school students where 60% of the student population come from an economically disadvantaged background. Our school also has very limited funding for clubs and projects. In light of these obstacles, my students are extremely motivated, dedicated to their learning and overwhelmingly talented! The students I teach are absolutely fearless. They dive head first asking questions, researching answers and are not afraid to speak up. Having a school newspaper gives them the platform they need to have their voices heard within the community.

My Project

Last year, we were first school in our district to launch a newspaper that is both digital and student run. Our goal is to submit our best publication to the upcoming VHSL Media Competition held at the end of the school year.

One of the biggest challenges students faced was having limited access to audio-visual technology and laptops used to work solely on the newspaper platform.

Having two cameras readily available for students to check out will greatly impact the quality of the newspaper with up-to-date images. Having two laptops dedicated to downloading images, uploading stories, managing the newspaper platform and publishing content will also be a great benefit to student. They would not have to rely on their personal devices they way they have in the past.

These materials will give students the hands-on experience to spark interest towards journalism, writing, and media as future careers.
