My Students
The students at my school attend a school that has a history of 50+ years. It is a neighborhood school, so a majority of our students live in the neighborhood, and know each other from outside school events. We are also an open enrollment school, meaning many of our student choose to provide transportation in order to attend our school. We have an English Language Learner population which is mainly Hispanic. My students are bright, curious, and highly motivated by projects and hands-on materials.
My Project
Part of my job as an art teacher is to help students to think like an artist by generating and revising an idea. They need to find ways to generate original ideas, make personal connections to a theme and plan their project in positive ways that allow them to experiment and take risks. Journaling has helped my students to focus, and it has helped me to follow their thought process. It gives them a safe place to record their ideas, make mistakes, and revise their ideas. Using copy paper allows students to expand their books as needed by adding paper, and is much more cost effective than sketchbooks would be. While I have a basic easel, It only has one functional side. This means that I can't leave information up, or hang chart paper, without covering or erasing information that other students may still be using. A two sided easel will allow me to participate in our school initiative of daily messages, which is an important routine that allows some consistency as students move through their day.
