Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our health science based school is located in the heart of Manhattan where hospitals and pharmacies are bustling and in need of highly qualified, educated youth to join their forces. My students are undoubtedly small fish in a big pond. As a Title I New York City public high school 90% of the student population falls below the poverty line. The opportunities these youth are granted in school aid in propelling them to strive towards a more defined, purposeful, and successful future.
My Project
Communication is the key to success. In our classroom, I want to provide students with the opportunity to maintain a journal during our daily writing block. This chunk of time in our lesson- plan routine allows students time to articulate connections to in-class texts, analysis of thematic quotes and the freedom to flow with a stream of consciousness.
Being able to reflect, question, and discuss their thoughts, feelings and ideas is critical for students' social-emotional & academic growth.
Our students want to be heard and while we cannot always afford them the time to vocalize their opinions, writing them, can be just as powerful!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
