Joining a Future of Computer Science With Chromebooks

My Project

I teach at a wonderful school in the Austin area of Chicago. This is the first year of them having a Computer Science/STEAM enrichment class and I have been granted the honor of being their teacher. Our school population is 97% low-income with the majority of them being Black and Hispanic. These first few months of class has had the students so excited to be able to learn how to correctly do things on the computer, as well as learn about things that can be done that they didn't know the computer could do.

Very few of the children have technological devices at home to use for exploration, so school is where they get to explore.

My class is something they look forward to. Depending on their grade, they are learning to touch type, code, create music, use the 3-D printer and more. Recently we have been getting a lot of new students to transfer in and we are not getting new Chromebooks from the school district. I would like to keep the student to Chromebook ratio at 1 to 1. With each student being able to work on their own Chromebook, their work can be safely saved, it decreases their frustration of work being lost or mistakenly erased, I can make sure the Chromebooks are kept at an optimal performance level with me keeping the devices in my room, and most of all, they can be their most creative selves without having to share.

There is no reason why the students should not be able to learn about how the technology of today's world works. All we need is a class set of computers and a charging cart. We appreciate all of the help you can provide us. Thank you in advance.
