This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach high school students who participate in our music program. Our high school serves a large, urban area of Chicago, IL, and has a high percentage of students from low-income homes. Our student body is culturally diverse and provides our school community an opportunity to experience music and customs from many cultures as we interact every day. Creating and encouraging music learning opportunities for our diverse student population promotes inclusion and diversity in our educational programs.

Many of my students do not have the opportunity to explore and experience high-quality music instruction outside of the school setting.

It is exciting to see my students grow in their knowledge and excitement of music. Many of our students will continue their participation in the music program for three or four years during high school.

My Project

My choir/piano students love the learning that is taking place in their classroom. Due to our covid-19 school shutdown, students did not participate in regular in-person learning for much of last year. Our classes are categorized as elective classes and we rely on the visibility of our programs and word of mouth advertisement as one of the main recruitment tools for our classes. Last year all of our concerts and performances that generate interest in our program were canceled and we are looking for out of the box ideas that we can use to advertise our award-winning music programs.

This project will help defray the cost of the tee shirts that we are requesting.They will help advertise/promote our choir and keyboard classes throughout our school community.

This will give my music students an opportunity to promote our classes as they interact with others and participate in their daily educational routines.
