My Students

I listen to my 4th graders. Sometimes they think I don't, but I really do! For the past two years, I have been listening. . . and I have heard my kiddos beg over and again for "Joey!!" Who's Joey? Well, Joey Pigza, of course. He is a memorable character indeed! Can you help bring him to our classroom?

Teaching reading from my basal reader is a task that I look forward to.

It has interesting stories, and it helps me teach important reading skills. My students, however, don't readily anticipate daily lessons from our reading book as I do. It's too much like work! They crave "real" stories. Books! They like to read together as a group, at Literature Circles, and independently. I've coined a term for them: they are "ripe for reading." What I mean is that 4th graders are just learning to LOVE to read! Because of this, I have collected several class sets of books to share with my students. We read these throughout the year when we need a break from our traditional reading book. "Sarah, Plain and Tall", "Number the Stars", "Stone Fox", and "Because of Winn-Dixie" are some favorites. Two years ago, I had ONE copy of "Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key" on my bookshelf, and a student found it and requested that I read a chapter a day after our lunch break. We were hooked in only one chapter!

My Project

Word spreads fast in our school, apparently. This year's class asked to be read the book as well! They've also requested to have extra copies so they can read along or read together at literacy stations. Like I said, I listen to my kids! This is what my students want and need! Books! Joey Pigza, the main character in the Joey series, is a wild child! He makes lots of mistakes and encourages my students to laugh. I understand why kids are drawn to his antics; I believe they relate to him--he is a real character to them in many ways. However, I simply love that Joey inspires my kids to READ!

Thankfully, my very special 6th grade teacher encouraged me to read.

I still remember the day she began reading "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott aloud to my class. It was as if my love for reading was born that day! I didn't realize how much fun reading could be. It's true! It's my hope that I can guide just one of my students to discover the pure JOY of reading. Joey is ready and waiting to help. . . I'm willing to do my part as well. . . now we just need you! Help bring Joey to our classroom.
