My Project

I am an autistic support special education teacher in a public school in Philadelphia, and my students are some of the greatest teenagers that I know. My students require a functional curriculum focused on academics, communication, community, domestic and vocational skills. This means that my job is to help prepare my students for life outside and high school. We work on these needed skills through various ways including but not limited to cooking, baking, doing community-based instruction trips, working closely with other classes, and building skills through hands on materials. Even though my students experience economic struggles and academic barriers, they come to school every day and work their hardest in our room!

My students are working towards building their vocational skill resume by running their own cafe in our building.

They get to go through the process of taking orders, collecting money, making change, cooking food, preparing drinks, and serving those in their community. In running the cafe my students get the chance to work on their job skills that can transfer to other jobs outside of our building. Not only do they get to build their vocational skills, but the funds from our cafe go towards things such as keeping the cost of field trips low and to help cover the cost of school activities- such as prom! With your donations you will be providing them with the items they need to keep their cafe running smoothly. We go through cups, lids, gloves, and aluminum foil weekly! We are also looking for a toaster oven and countertop ice machine to help make sure we have enough ice for our iced drinks we sell each week. These supplies will help keep us moving forward in order to be able to continuing to expand in multiple areas of our cafe!
