it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As each day passes, and I spend more time with my students, I notice that they have read very little in their lives. I sense this when they read out loud, I notice it when I read their writing. They will be, in two years, applying to various colleges across the country. It is my duty to prepare them for it, and to instill in them the joy that I have found for reading. I believe my students have not yet had the feeling of being completely immersed in a novel, of being lost inside of it, and of seeing new landscapes from another's point of view and finding that their own vision has been altered forever.
I have the unique honor of giving a very special gift to my students: the life-long joy of reading.
My students love reading books that they are deeply passionate about. For many, access is the missing piece of the puzzle. They feel disillusioned by the school's library.
I want my classroom to be the ultimate library.
I want my students to stare at my bookshelves that line my walls and think to themselves, "I can't wait to read that next!"
I will incorporate an independent reading project into the curriculum by devoting parts of each week to allow students to read a book that they have chosen for themselves.
This will promote literacy and instill a passion for reading.
