My Students

In the language of music, jazz is a beast all its own! Help us open the doors to the American tradition of jazz music in our band! My students have the background history of jazz in our country and we want to make it a part of our musical lives!

We are a Title 1, inner city school, located in Connecticut.

Many of our students are English language learners and 100% of the student population receives free/reduced lunches. Every student has music class and in the middle school they spend a unit learning about the history, composition, and effect of jazz music in the United States. We work tirelessly to make real world connections with our students and to give them the opportunity to perform jazz music would really cement this knowledge in them. It is one thing to listen and research, but the act of performing and becoming a part of the music is amazing!

My Project

Prior to this school year, I had been split between two schools. This split left a huge hole in what I was able to do with my students because there was never enough time! This year, we are pulling out all the stops and starting up a jazz band, something we have been dreaming about for years now! This book set of jazz methods is a perfect fit for my beginning jazz band. It provides a comprehensive and well thought out approach to jazz music and its application. I do my best to create a full music education to my students, and exposure to the construction and performance of jazz music is key! Having it's birthplace in the United States, it is essential that my students have a rich knowledge of the history of jazz through real world application. With this book set, my students will have one of the final pieces for the tools needed to put our jazz band together! Without the music to learn from, we are at a standstill in our jazz education.

A full education includes a music education!

It is my goal to expose my students to as much music as I can before they enter high school! It has been a dream of ours to start up a jazz band and it is beginning to become a reality! Help us make our dream come to life!
