Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My 7th grade students learn in a departmentalized middle school setting within a preK to 8th grade elementary school. In addition to teaching three sections of ELA, I am teaching my homeroom Social Studies because we don't have a dedicated teacher for that subject area anymore. I have several students with IEPs as well as a number of whom are well above grade level. Our school is located in the inner city of Chicago and many of our students or their parents have immigrated from other countries, including several migrant students who have just arrived from Venezuela and other Latin American countries. Although I love all classes equally, my homeroom students are especially curious, eager to learn, and full of energy. They love to apply what they've learned through writing, art, music, or technology.
Unfortunately, the Social Studies curriculum provided by our district uses an online textbook that is not very engaging for my creative students, who are very much hands-on learners.
To supplement this curriculum, I would like to incorporate standards-based lessons from Teachers Pay Teachers. These lessons include, but are not limited to: research projects, interactive notebooks, flip books, games, bulletin board resources, exit slips, word walls, graphic organizers, writing activities, leveled reading passages, and quick print-to-go lessons that students will truly enjoy. Some of these resources are even in Spanish! I can find tons of lessons at the click of a button that correspond with our online text. I simply download them as is, or edit them to meet the specific needs of my students and curriculum.
Please donate to this project so that I can continue to help my students learn what they are required to know in a much more exciting, hands-on manner.
