My Students
We need an OUTLET! Due to budget cuts and heavy demands on testing, our students have no recess, no gym and no outlets! Help us provide students with a Jazzy option as we put together instruments for a Jazz Band!
I teach kindergarten to eighth grade music.
With the current budget crisis in the state of Illinois affecting the state funding for education, schools have been forced to make large budget cuts. Our school no longer has funding for extra curricular activities. In addition, our students do not have recess or physical education. I have been teaching an after school choir for the past two years that the participating students greatly enjoy as an outlet and a way to express themselves. I have had many students ask me about different band instruments from saxophone to trumpet and from clarinet to drums. These students are yearning for instruments and are very excited about the idea of a band.
My Project
I have been able to obtain some instruments in the past two years at this school. We now have a clarinet, a baritone, a saxophone and a piano. I also have a trumpet or two on the way. In order to finish our instrumentation for a jazz band we need some trombones and a flute. The items on my "Wish List" are two student level trombones and a flute (all with warrantees). These instruments will complete our jazz band and give our students the chance to not only learn how to play their instruments, but to have fun learning and making music together! They will apply and improve their ability to make music and they will have a chance to express themselves through music. My students would learn about the history and culture of the many different styles of music they could play on these instruments. Furthermore, their experiences with music will give them the opportunity to find an outlet and give them something positive to look forward to!
Our students will be able to find an outlet and release through a jazz band.
This will allow them to enjoy school more, and give them an extra incentive to work hard around the board. Their experience with jazz will open their minds to new styles of music and artists that they may have never heard before and it will spark their interest in the arts! Finally, and possibly most importantly, these instruments will help raise the entire school morale, motivation, and pride.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
