This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Charlie Parker...Coltrane...Miles Davis. Any of these names ring a bell? These are the jazz greats and my students are learning and LOVIN' this style of music. I teach music at a low-income elementary school where all students receive free lunch so they can't afford their own instrument.
There was a recent vote in our district to cut spending for the arts by 50% next year and possibly by 100% the following year.
Luckily, I am at a charter school that supports the arts but we depend on donors and other supporters to help with our music program. As we build our program, we are trying to add to the brass and woodwinds sections, and increase our genres of music by adding saxophones to our elementary mix.
My Project
The students love to play and many use music to express themselves. They are learning lessons that will be with them for the rest of their lives. They are learning to read music, understand music theory, and listen to great performers to form their own vision of being a great musician in the future. To help add to our woodwind section, I am requesting 1 saxophone and 1 pack of reeds for my classroom.
YOU may be able to put a sax into the next great jazz player's hand.
YOU will be able to give a child the opportunity to express and communicate the many emotions and statements that only music can. It's up to YOU. Thank you for caring about music education! :)
