Japanese Kanji and Calligraphy Practice

My students need to practice kanji (Chinese characters) often by using 15 mini Buddha board gift cards.

My Students

In Japanese students learn to listen, speak read and write in Japanese. On a typical day we do many activities, sing (sometimes dance) and enjoy language learning.

Our students are internationally minded and curious about the world although we are located in a rural area.

Japanese students are interested in many aspects of Japanese culture and many of the students continue to study Japanese at the university and in the workplace after graduation.

My Project

In Japanese 1 students learn hiragana, katakana and some kanji. By Japanese 4, students must know 410 kanji for the AP/IB tests. We practice with pen and paper, whiteboards and sidewalk chalk. On special occasions (once or twice a year) we write kanji with calligraphy brushes, paper and ink. These materials are both messy and expensive so we do not have a chance to use them as often as we would like.

Students enjoy the tactile experience of writing with a brush.

Students' understanding of how kanji strokes relate to one another greatly increases with more practice. Donations to this project with allow students to get more hands on experience with kanji thereby increasing the breadth of their vocabulary and familiarity with kanji.
