Drumming is a very popular activity in my music room. This year we began using the World Music Drumming curriculum, and it has been extremely popular with my students. We drum while singing, playing xylophones, and dancing.
My students enjoy singing, moving, and playing instruments in music class.
We are a suburban Title 1 school with around 400 students in preschool through fifth grade. The children come to music twice a week for thirty minutes. Each grade has the opportunity to perform for the community each year. Our school offers before-school choir and drumming groups for third through fifth grade students. We are a tight knit community and music is a vital part of who we are.
My Project
My students will use the djembe every day in music class. They will have the opportunity to learn about the history and culture of this drum; how it is made, how it is played, and its importance in African music. They will have opportunities to improvise their own rhythms and play given rhythms as part of a larger ensemble of drummers, dancers and singers. Learning to play the djembe will help my students progress as musicians.
Donations to this project will help improve my classroom in many ways.
Drumming with this djembe will give all of my students a chance to shine in the spotlight when improvising their own rhythms. It will teach them about the drumming culture of Africa, countries many of my students have never even heard of. My students will become better musicians for knowing how to play the djembe and better people for knowing its history and the culture of those who play it thousands of miles away.
