My Students
My students look forward to the annual WAW vote. We have one copy of the 17 nominated books for 600 students. To certify, the students must read two of the books. This request is Part One of our project and will provide each grade level with two copies of the books available in paperback.
Our middle school is in a mid-sized urban school district with a diverse student population.
Grades 6, 7, and 8 attend a campus which just celebrated its 50th anniversary.
We continue to meet annual yearly progress even though the demographics of the school are changing and the budget gets tighter. We need help providing the resources our students need to continue their participation in the annual Kansas WAW vote.
My Project
We are working to instill in our students a love of reading that will be with them all their lives. We know that people who read are competent problem solvers and flexible learners. We are committed to the concept of having a well-educated electorate as the foundation for our democracy.
Our students know the prestigious WAW awards go to the books THEY choose, so they experience the power of the vote. They read a range of genres and authors which comprise the very best in literature, so they learn what constitutes a well-written story. In addition, our teachers use the WAW nominated books in creative and engaging literacy projects and encourage student participation in the vote.
The WAW Award annual vote is a tradition at our middle school.
Some of our students read all the nominated books every year. We are hoping to take those students to the award celebration in Emporia, Kansas, next fall.
