My students, like all students, have been through so much these last few years. They have missed out on so much learning and school experiences. 5th grade is such an important year because my students are transitioning to middle school. The middle schools that they will go to are very large. Usually, they have a few years to get prepared by gaining independence little by little. since the pandemic, my students have come from a variety of learning situations. Some stayed home and did Zoom classes. Some were home and although they were supposed to do Zoom, there are many students that weren't able to participate in one way or another. There were technology issues, and being at home is so distracting compared to the structure of a classroom. Some students were able to come back to school in January when we started Hybrid learning but they had missed the first half of the year and we were always trying to catch up and get them prepared for the next grade.
My students are primarily from low-income homes and are students that were already struggling in Reading and Math and the Pandemic has put them ever further behind.
My Project
IXL is an online tool that my students will be able to use in the classroom as well as at home to help improve their math skills. My students are coming to 5th grade after being home for over a year and a half because of the pandemic. I will use IXL as a supplemental tool to help my students gain confidence in Math as well as a chance for them to work at their level. IXL has lessons for students of all ages and abilities. I will be able to assign students work based on their current skill level and not just their grade level. I want to give my students every opportunity that I can to prepare them for middle school next year, especially with the learning gaps that they are experiencing.
