My classroom is a small high school classroom for students ages 14-18 with multiple disabilities. Students may be diagnosed with cerebral palsy, forms of autism, chromosomal disorders and other conditions. The students in the classroom are bussed from surrounding towns to participate in an integrated therapeutic program that meets their educational needs. This means that although we are housed in a district of low economic need our classroom is not made up of students from that district. Most of the students are wheelchair users who communicate through augmentative and alternative communication. Many of the students are visually impaired and have health impairments such as epilepsy. My students are hard working individuals who love to learn and participate in school.

Loving to learn isn't enough when a student faces multiple special needs. Assistive technology is also needed to give students with physical challenges access to the curriculum and the world around them. However assistive technology can be extremely expensive. Just one wireless button that allows a student to access specialized computer software or adapted school tools can cost over $200.

Your donation can give me an Ablenet Wireless Jelly Beamer with SLAT to share with my students from year to year in my classroom. An Ablenet Wireless Jelly Beamer is a special button (or switch) that can control adapted computer software, toys, school tools (like special scissors) and appliances (like blenders). The fact that it is wireless means it can be used from across the room and that other switches can be plugged into it, helping to prevent the spread of the germs when everyone is pressing the same button. The SLAT allows the button to be set to direct (any time the button is held down the item is on), latch (the button becomes an on/off switch), or timed (set the button to turn the device on from 1 second to 60 minutes). This gives us even more flexibility in how we use this great tool.

Your donation literally gives me the ability to give my students "the power" over their worlds. This button becomes a remote control to just about anything from the radio to the paper shredder! Students who usually sit and watch while someone else "does" can become the "doers"!
