Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day in my classroom is anything but typical. This year, we have taken a strengths-based approach to learning, and my students have discovered different talents within themselves. As a group, we are beginning to appreciate others for their strengths, and find new ways to showcase our own.
My scholars are 32 energetic sixth grade GATE students.
They are a group that has been together since second grade, and are about to embark on a new journey into middle school. They are a passionate, kind, and resilient bunch that perseveres even through difficult situations. They come from a wide span of home lifestyles ranging from military families to single parent families. They are eager to learn, and have a thirst for reading and using technology. This year, they have strengthened their technological abilities, and are learning to integrate new components of media into presentations and projects. My school has started an arts program that teaches students dance, signing, art, computer programming, and various musical instruments both throughout the day and after school. While the students are excited to learn the new programming elements, they are held back due to the fact that they don't have the necessary tools to take their progress to the next level.
My Project
This iPad will assist my students to create video games and animations using computer programming sites and apps. Students will use this tool to learn the basics of coding with programming blocks. These creations will be based on desired outcomes, requiring students to use problem solving skills and perseverance. They will infuse their creations with motions, sounds, and animated elements. They will use their computer programming abilities to learn how to use the programs Scratch and Hopscotch to carry out their desired outcomes. After projects have been created, students will participate in a showcase for the school to demonstrate how their programming skills have progressed over time, and the benefits of learning a skills that can expose them to potential careers. Through the use of this iPad, students can learn coding skills and see their ideas and imagination take control as they produce a creation that can be manipulated by the user, based on the coding that the project has.
Donations will improve my classroom climate because we will create a culture of problem solvers who look at situations differently.
We can start immediately by diving into our coding process through the iPad technology. By allowing students to explore and learn a craft that they are passionate about, we can foster our learning in a way that is productive and can open doors for them to explore careers down the road. It will also give students a sense of pride in their accomplishments.
