I've Got The Blues For A Guitar, But I Have NO Strings!

My students need eight starter acoustic guitars.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Peterkin's classroom raised $513

My Students

Of the two years I have served as Music Director at my school, it has been my aim to build a stable Music Program from the "ground up". Having the need for various musical equipment, my goal at this time is to provide my students with 8 starter acoustic guitars to meet their needs at this time.

With such tight reigns on what I was permitted to do just one year ago, I can proudly say that the music program now has 8 electronic music keyboards with keyboard benches, and 8 headphone sets; All thanks to donors, like you, from DonorsChoose.org!

Each day, classes begin with a variety of rhythm exercises of which students clap out rhythms, displayed on the blackboard, to get their blood flowing and their brains going. Although much of a challenge for some, due to their lack of familiarity with the type of music instruction given, many of my students are eager to learn new pieces of piano music, as they challenge each other to be the best in "friendly competition" and now insist on learning the string instrument, the guitar. Despite their low socio-economic status, raised in the projects of Chicago's notorious south side with nothing to spare financially in their homes or school, my students have shown great interest in having a thriving band, choir, orchestra, and musical theater.

My Project

Without the opportunity to see what any of these programs would look like in their school, students have often communicated concerns of feeling inferior; That they "...don't even almost compare to the many [prestigious] schools" they have heard of. Anxious to get to the keyboards that are in class each day, my students have expressed joy in being able to finally "do" music instead of simply taking notes about it and watching videos of other schools and are now longing to use those skills learned with other instruments in the string family. In having the requested materials, students will be able to expand upon their knowledge in the theory of music, further understanding how music notes and clefs are the same across each instrument, gaining a better understanding of various types of scales, chords, and modes on the fret board, and increase their rhythmic and melodic accuracy in reading rhythmic notation, music scores, and learning how to read tablatures.

With your help, together, we can help change the lives of my students for the better by allowing them to see that someone cares enough to give them items that they need to be successful in their music class.

Not only will this help my students; however, this will be a great benefit to me as my students will be able to further build upon their performance skills in other instrument areas and heal them from their Blues due to obtaining more instruments for learning purposes.
