My students need an MP3 player and a headphone splitter in order to improve reading fluency and comprehension.

My Students
Imagine trying to read a book with challenging vocabulary. Wouldn’t it be great to listen to the audio version of a text while reading it? In iTunes, I can download the audio version of our science textbook as well as books from various genres onto the iPod to improve my students’ comprehension.
My school gets very little funding, and almost everything for our classrooms is funded by the teachers.
We are a Title I school, and over half of our students are economically disadvantaged. I’m a fifth grade teacher who teaches 33 students in all academic areas. I also teach science to the other two fifth grade classes. With our sparse resources, the listening centers that are available are bulky and have a limited selection of titles. The iPod will allow me to download a variety of literature for my diverse group of students, who have a wide range of interests and abilities.
It’s amazing to see the spark when students become so involved in a book and they don’t want to put it down. Having the ability to pack a virtual library into an MP3 device the size of a cassette makes listening to books more accessible both in the classroom as well as on the school yard. I would love for my students to sit under the tree while reading about photosynthesis and listening to the audio text on the iPod.
My Project
Having students utilize this cutting edge technology to improve their science understanding and be exposed to a wide variety of literature will help prepare them for secondary education. In today’s high-tech society, it is important for this young generation to incorporate technology into their daily workload and become more technically savvy. My students will have equal access and exposure to the iPod in the classroom, and the headphone splitter has five jacks so students can access the technology together in small groups.
Being able to download literature onto the iPod will allow my students to listen and read along, while improving their comprehension and fluency. Adding an external voice recorder to the iPod would also be a great asset to my students. I have an incredible reader in my class, but she has difficulty projecting her voice when she reads orally to the class. With this device, she can record herself reading and then play it back for herself and others to listen to.
With this iPod, the possibilities of student improvement and enrichment are endless.
As technology advances, we see a change from books-on-tape to downloadable stories on iTunes. This iPod serves as a listening center while reinforcing speaking and reading. Using the iPod in my classroom will help struggling readers improve their fluency, comprehension, and confidence as well as challenge stronger readers to read difficult books they might not have otherwise attempted. What a powerful resource!
