It's Time to Help Students Heal and Grow

Help me give my students books and stress-relieving tools to help them manage and develop their social, emotional, overall mental well-being.

My Project

My students are bright, inquisitive sixth graders who are taking their first steps into the big wide world of middle school with increasing social, emotional, and academic pressures. They have also had to deal with the changes and trauma caused by the COVID-19 pandemic during these valuable formative years. With these changes, books can act as an avenue for some of these students to receive wisdom and advice about how to move through a world that demands so much from them. I hope that our classroom library can be a space for students to read and grow in a positive and safe environment. In order for that to happen though, our classroom library should have books that cover topics that students really care about. Several of the materials I have requested are books that cover issues that I have seen students struggle with first-hand like anxiety, mindfulness, acceptance, empathy, and just surviving as a middle schooler.

We need to help students get excited and comfortable learning again.

Many of my students come from homes where reading and learning is not the norm or encouraged, so offering small incentives can also be a way to help students make positive connections with reading as they are praised and rewarded for their efforts. Offering incentives like stickers and small toys are a great way to encourage students to try their best with reading without pressuring them too much. My intention is that as students continue to read while feeling the positive effects of reading, they will grow to become more comfortable and willing to read on their own without the need for extrinsic rewards. Some of the incentives I have requested can also act as stress-relivers, and can give students the positive feeling of accomplishment when they earn one for good behavior.
