My Students
The students I have the privilege of working with are from culturally diverse backgrounds. Many of my students face challenges outside of school and do not always have the opportunity to learn about the world around them and current events. They are a fabulous and caring group of future leaders.
Our school is located in an urban area and we receive Title one funding.
As a teacher, I create an inviting, comfortable atmosphere within our walls, and want my students to feel confident to have opinions and to appreciate other's view points. I teach them to take chances and not be afraid to speak their mind. We practice point of view discussions by participating in Socratic seminars, where all voices are heard and listened to.
The students I serve see the world from different perspectives. Therefore, we use Project Based Learning lessons. The students love it and are challenged every day. They work in groups a lot of the time which enables them to solve problems, look at things from another point of view, and practice communication skills. I am guiding them to become lifelong learners.
My Project
By having access to TIME for Kids, my students will be able to be current with today's issues. It will allow them to form their own point of view after researching and investigating the facts of events happening in the world around them. The students will have access to the magazine and the online resource. The weekly issues cover a wide range of real-world topics using nonfiction text and themes kids love to learn about, while building non-fiction literacy skills and helping students better understand their world. TIME for kids uses high-interest topics, which promotes a passion for reading and learning!
