This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 21 of the most amazing fourth-grade students who are a dynamic mixture of general education, special education, and ELL students. One thing that makes our school unique is that we are a universal poverty school, so all students are entitled to free meals. We have breakfast in the class, lunch, and many students stay after school so they can have dinner as well. We are in a very rough neighborhood, but my kiddos don't give up!
This year is QUITE unique - I have more students tuning in remotely than I have in person.
I chose in person learning, and then soon went to blended since I only had 8 kids sign up for in person. After a few students were quarantined due to Covid - my principal saw me Livestreaming and a few days later asked if I would take more kids to reduce the class size in the fully remote classes. I thought about it. If I could do it for my 3 kiddos, why not take a few more! Well, my 8 grew to 21! It isn't easy! It isn't perfect! But it is what teaching is like in 2020! #Teacherlife
My Project
So my class has gone from in-person only, to blended with me teaching in person and remote to the same class, to having several kids go on quarantine due to covid which made me livestream so they wouldn't fall behind, to my principal seeing me livestream and talking me into taking on more kiddos remotely to reduce the number of students in the remote only classes.
So here I am, started the year with 8 kiddos and now I have 21 kiddos and I am livestreaming everyday.
WHO KNEW? We are three months into the 2020-2021 school year and I have "pivoted" and "been flexible" more than I have in my entire 24 years of teaching.
So I need more options for remote learning. That is why I am asking for the digital subscription to Time with Kids! They have great non-fiction current event type articles that are written for kids and presented with multiple reading levels. This is important since I have kids who are reading as low as second grade and as high at sixth grade in my 4th grade class. I need options for guided reading, and current events always seem to keep the interest of little ones.
