Technology is ALMOST everywhere! Students today are expected to understand and utilize technology at an ever increasing rate. The problem for my students, is that while technology seems to be everywhere, it is rarely in their precious hands.
My second grade students are AMAZING!
I teach an inclusion classroom of special education, ESL and general education students. They come from a variety of circumstances. Some of the children in my room have faced adversity that I cannot fathom, but they show up everyday with a smile and a can-do attitude. They inspire me to be a better person everyday.
Our school is a title one school. The parents of the children in my classroom struggle to put food on the table and clothes in the closet. Things like i Pads and i Phones are not something that my children even imagine owning.
Our school, like so many other schools, has dealt with gigantic budget cuts. We do not have even ONE student computer in our classroom. The computers my students do have access to, are outdated and often in need of repair. Their access to these is very limited due to location and the amount of students needing each machine.
My Project
I am asking for this tablet to put technology directly into my students hands. My students are the most respectful and appreciative people I know. I know that they will be thrilled to have such a new and wonderful piece of technology in our classroom. We will use it in a variety of ways. I will load it with spelling, phonics, language, reading and math applications. We will use it during our small group reading times to look up information about the topic we are reading about to increase our schema about the topic and show students how to use the world wide web. I envision one of my special education students using it as a means to communicate more clearly. The possibilities are endless!
I adore my students!
I want them to be able to compete academically and otherwise with the students that they will soon be going to school with in junior high and high school. I want to "level the playing field" in any small way that I can. I feel that increased access to technology is essential in this goal. We would be so grateful for this wonderful piece of technology.
