It's Time for Our Music Education to BOOM!

My students need boomwhackers and a parachute to give a hands on approach to learning music. Also they need the composer posters to help aid music history education.

My Students

Many of us our visual and kinesthetic learners and my students are a prime example. They need materials that will help them solidify their connections to what they have already been learning in music.

I have approximately 500 students, ranging from grades Pre-K to 6th grade.

There is a high English as a second language population, over 65% free and reduced lunch, many are children in transition, and we also have a large amount of students with special needs in the building. This is a public school that is classified as title 1. I have been teaching at this school for five years now and I have to say our students respect the materials that they are given and are very willing to learn. They work hard to surpass the challenges that have been placed in front of them.

My Project

First I am requesting a parachute to use with my Pre-K classes. I teach 7 classes of Pre-K music and all of these classes have students with special needs, many of them physical. The parachute will allow me to do music activities that help strengthen their hands while developing pitch and rhythm. I am also requesting posters about composers because my students are visual learners and if they could put a face with the music they are listening too they will have a better chance of retaining the material. Lastly I am requesting full sets of Boom Whackers and materials to use with them. Boom Whackers are a great way to take students from just singing a song to singing and playing. They are a simple instrument that allows the students to create melodies and harmonies and build on their developing musical foundation. They are great for students that might be behind academically and students that struggle with physical limitations.

My curriculum crosses into all fields of study; the students work on reading, writing, mathematics, science, history, and physical education in my classroom. You won't just be aiding in their music education you will be helping them develop into well rounded individuals.
