My Project
From an early age, people are interested in identifying rocks and minerals. Most of my students have some sort of collection that is special to them, and they enjoy sharing their collections as we begin our geology study. It's fascinating how invested my students can be as they apply their knowledge to new information learned in class. Our examination of minerals will start visually using a hand lens, then we will run specific tests to determine color, streak, hardness (using the Mohs Hardness Scale), fracture, cleavage, and magnetism. We will also conduct a carbonate test using an acid solution. After completing all of these tests, we will identify the mineral in question.
With these minerals and test kits, my students will become proficient at mineral identification.
After identification, we will then organize the minerals according to specific properties using the results of each of the tests conducted. Participating in hands-on experiences like this one will foster a lifelong love of exploring the natural world.
