Help me give my students important hands-on math materials like two-color foam counters, pattern blocks, and geared student clocks to increase their engagement in learning their 1st grade math skills!

My Students
"What time is it Mr. Fox?" Do you remember playing that game out on the lawn or on the yard when you were in 1st grade? I sure do! Well, to answer that question . . . It's TIME for math! Every year I am blessed to have a class of math lovers! They like to learn new concepts and work together to solve problems. These 5 - 7 year old students learn best when they can use concrete materials to really cement their understandings.
I am fortunate to teach two dozen bright and energetic 1st grade students filled with enthusiasm and wonder.
Our class is part of a small, public Title 1 elementary school with a large population of second language learners. Although these youngsters come from the same local community, their socioeconomic and multicultural backgrounds are quite varied. I love that about our group! We all have so much to share with each other.
My Project
In an age of digital clocks and watches, these "old fashioned" individual geared student clocks will help my young students understand how time is measured and the relationship between the minute and hour hands. The two-color counters will be used almost daily by my 1st graders as they work out problems involving addition and subtraction, story problems, place value, and more. The pattern blocks will not only help them learn the attributes of shapes, but they will also help them explore their critical thinking and creativity as they discover which smaller shapes were used to make larger shapes, and as they create their own composite shapes.
As I look back, I find I learned many things from teaching through the recent pandemic.
One of them is that not only is it important for the students to have concrete math manipulatives to explore and learn new concepts, but it is also important for them to have control of those materials. I learned that instead of passing out the manipulative of the day, just to collect them again an hour later, the students increase not only their math skills, but also their critical thinking skills as they decide which tool works best for them as they make math discoveries.
Having used all my classroom math manipulatives to prepare kits for the students to use at home during remote learning last year, I now find myself without enough materials to make "keep in your desk" kits for my current class. I would love to be able to make individual kits for each student to call their own with the clocks, blocks, and counters as the contents. That way they will be ready when it is, "TIME for Math!"
