Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm sure all of us remember a time when we were sitting in a classroom and not feeling engaged with the resources that were being used. With the help of Time for Kids and the high-interest articles found within, I know that I can truly engage all of my students when using informational materials.
I teach in a small migrant community.
Many of my students are second language learners. Having taught in this community for 13 years, I feel incredibly close to many families. Most of my students are way behind in their reading skills. Even though they are low-performing, so many of them try their hardest every day.
My Project
With the new Common Core Standards, there is a real push to use informational materials. The short, high-interest articles and pictures found in the Time for Kids magazines will truly engage my students. We will use them for learning to read, reading to learn, projects, and presentations.
I believe the Time for Kids magazines will interest my students and allow them the opportunity to be truly engaged with an informational material.
I want to help my students gain mastery of Common Core Standards. I also want to ensure that they develop the skills needed to use informational materials out in the world as they enter college and move beyond to their careers.
