My Students
What was your 2nd grade experience like? Well, I sure can remember mine. I know that despite limited resources my teacher tried to make our experience as engaging and worthwhile as possible.
I am currently teaching in a low income neighborhood where many parents struggle to provide for their children.
As a result many of our school's students get their best meals at school, sometime their only meals. Recently teachers were notified that our school budget was significantly cut and as a result we would not be reimbursed or able to purchase materials for our classroom. At this point I do not know what to do. Every year I purchase new books for the library, and supplies (pencils, notebooks, etc.) for the classroom. Many parents are unable to afford to donate to the class or do not send their children with school supplies at all. Because of their hardships I have always made a way for my students to have a successful, engaging and fulfilling year. Unfortunately due to budget cuts, this year will be a lot different.
My Project
Although I am only asking for pencils, a pencil sharpener, books, a numberline and article subscriptions these items are well needed. As mentioned before, from past experiences with students in my school, I know it can be rough for parents to afford to donate to the classroom. With these resources, students will not have to scramble around for writing utensils. They will also have a more interactive, engaging and hands-on approach to math with the use of a hands-on numberline as well as literature-based math texts.
I can not emphasize enough how much my students will be short-handed this school year, but every penny makes a difference.
These small and well needed items are a start. With my passion for teaching, dedication to my students' education and your help my students will definitely have a better chance at a more effective and prosperous school year.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
