My Students
During the FIRST Robotics "build” season, my dedicated and talented students spend over 275 hours in the Robotics Lab, above and beyond their already-challenging school day. They build every aspect of the robot themselves, including meticulously machining all its parts in-house in our Robotics Lab.
Our Robotics team members are a very ethnically and socioeconomically diverse group of students, commuting from all boroughs of New York City for the unique opportunities available to them at our school.
They come into the Lab every day brimming with ideas and tremendously excited to set to work problem-solving, building, and programming. They are highly motivated and greatly enjoy honing their technical skills through the hands-on educational opportunities afforded by our Robotics program and the Annual FIRST Robotics Challenge.
My Project
At Robotics competitions, the TechKnights not only vie against other public schools but against deep-pocketed private schools that invest substantially in their team’s pit and mobile shop capabilities. To improve our work speed, efficiency and organization between matches — when every moment counts — we need items such as rolling tool cabinets, mobile workstations, tool shelving systems, and a trolley. These simple systems will help us tremendously when we have to think on our feet.
After our last competition, the team came together and identified the need to more professionally organize the pit for the next season — and we are already eagerly looking forward to tackling the next FIRST Challenge.
Being members of a FIRST Robotics team not only affords my students unparalleled engineering opportunities while still in high school but provides access to a wide array of STEM scholarships for college and internships for FIRST alumni.
