This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are curious and creative English Language Learners! Some of them have just immigrated from other places, and others have been learning English for several years, so they have a wide range of abilities. They have also been through a wide range of experiences and obstacles when they arrive in my classroom. Some are separated from one or both parents; others are refugees; others are simply the children of hard-working families who hope that education and learning English will open a doorway out of the cycle of poverty.
My students love to activities that allow them to personalize their learning and express their ideas with the level of language they have, and use various modes to communicate.
Eager to learn and improving quickly, they are a joy to teach.
My Project
Our district is working hard to get laptops or tablets into every clasroom. I am lucky to have a well-maintained cart of laptops to use with my English Language Learners, and a set of headsets with microphones.
However, the older track-pads and mouse buttons make using some tablet-friendly apps (such as Nearpod or Kahoot jumbles) inconvenient or even frustrating.
Basically, anything that clicks and drags can be difficult to manage with precision. Having these requested thirty-five Kensington mice will make a big difference. Lowering the frustration level will allow my students to better enjoy using these tools for class activities.
In addition, I would love to be able to use the microphones on the headsets, but the laptops only have a single jack and the headsets have two male plugs for headphones/microphones. I need the Dynex? headphone and microphone plug adapters to have one more tool to individually assess speaking and read-alouds. Allowing students to record passages or responses orally using our Canvas course platform would give me time to spend helping students in class; then I could give full attention to assessing and giving feedback to the spoken work outside of instructional time. Increased accountability and feedback would encourage my students to push themselves in the areas of speaking and reading aloud.
