This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"What is today's date? How many days have we been in school? Wow, I can count in the hundreds!" These are words that are spoken each day in my classroom. I try to inspire this kind of talk during our morning meeting each day. However, our paper calendar is old, ripped and missing some numbers.

My students are eager first graders in an inner city TITLE I school.

My class is diversified in several ways. It includes English Language Learners, from several different cultures. It also includes students at all different levels of development. I need to keep all of my students engaged. My students love to count the number of days in school...which builds up to a 100th Day Celebration! They are also eager to learn about the calendar, months, seasons, counting and adding. First graders also crave structure and routine. The items that we need will allow me to keep my morning meeting area organized, yet accessible to the students for 'hands-on' work.

My Project

The Days in School Math Activity Center counts the number of days in school and provides manipulatives that represent ones, tens and hundreds. It also breaks out the number of days into an equation. As an experienced first grade teacher, I know that this visual, hands on learning helps students grasp the concept of place value. The Elementary Calendar Math Center is an Award Winner from Instructor Magazine - 2008 Teacher's Pick! It's not just a calendar... it provides targeted practice with important math skills—from solving word problems and working out number sentences to exploring number patterns and creating money combinations. In this way, I can differentiate my instruction to challenge students to reach the level that is challenging for them! The Teacher Chart Stand is an integral part of the success of these items. The stand has a giant magnetic write & wipe board on top…with 5 handy rings to hang pocket charts & chart tablets. There’s a roomy storage bin right underneath.

When you read the newspaper and watch the news, it can be discouraging to hear about the state of American students in math.

First grade sets the foundation for counting, learning math facts, sequencing and so much more. Due to drastic cuts to the education budget, these items won't be possible without your generosity! Please help to give my first graders the materials that they need to succeed in math!
